Gothic books are great. They first started to appear when the realist novel was coming into its own and, in their own way, have given birth to or influenced pretty much every major literary movement since then. The Gothic has given us detective fiction, horror, thrillers and centuries of escapism. Also, as it’s always been light fiction that’s been looked down on by serious readers of the time, you can show off nowadays by reading pretentious high-brow classics which are, in truth, action-driven page turners. What’s not to love?
